Introduction:

My name is Lee Richardson. I’m the Information Discovery and Metadata Librarian at the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I received my Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the University of South Carolina in 2000. You can see my full work history and education in my curriculum vitae below. My professional interests focus on organizing information and metadata. I’m excited to be a part of the HCLE team and use my skills outside of traditional library work.

Goals and Objectives:




Specific Tasks:
1. Explore Catalog Maintenance System and take notes (on your volunteer page or a daughter page linked to it) with attention to:
  • Whether you can figure out how to navigate the app and what instructions we should add
  • Whether you can find items in the database
  • Whether you can see the approximately 100 fields of metadata
  • Whether you can suggest other metadata items users might want about items.
When there is a URL at the bottom on the Identity Screen for an item, you should be able see the item by copying the url into a new tab on your browser. This is a temporary process for use until we get a better catalog interface designed.

2. Arrange with Liza for a login to the Catalog Maintenance System

3. Contact JessicaLynn (another new volunteer), Sharada, and Svetlana and compare assignments. Brainstorm about what tasks each of you would like to take on and what support you need to do them. Report your results to Liza

4. Learn how to:
  • create new wiki pages,
  • add anchors within pages and links between pages on the HCLE wiki.
  • use the wiki text editor when the WISIWIG editor won't cooperate
  • make links to non-HCLE web sites open in a new browse tab

5. Document what you learn and what questions you have so that we can create guides for new volunteers.

6. Cross check between the wiki and the Catalog Maintenance System to insure that:
  • Every item in the Digital Repository has an Identity page and URL link in the Catalog
  • Every picture and document on the wiki is in the Digital Repository and Catalog

7. For each catalog item, surf the web to find additional information about the item. If what you find does not fit easily into the catalog data fields make a wiki page for that item and dump the information there. If the site where you find the information looks stable, don't copy everything, just provide the link with a short explanation of what the visitor will find if they click on it. Some of what you find from web searches will be relevant to individual ed tech pioneer profiles or exhibit topics. Add links between the pioneer or topic pages and the item pages.
